Training on Genetic Resource Policies for Scientists in Agricultural Research Organizations.

Training on Genetic Resource Policies for Scientists in Agricultural Research Organizations.

Our partner-Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT through the CGIAR Initiative on Genebanks is launching the second edition of the online training course ‘Genetic Resources Policies for Agricultural Research Scientists’ starting from September 25 to 30th November, 2024.This course targets plant researchers and legal advisers working in national and international research and development organizations, including genebank staff, breeders, phytopatologists, bioinformaticians, seed system specialists and legal and policy experts.
The course consists of 7 modules. The modules include online text, quizzes, problem solving exercises, animations and videos. The selected participants will work through online materials at their own pace. The training will help you to appreciate how daily operations of plant scientists are affected by national and international laws and organizational policies governing access to, and use of, plant genetic resources and related information. After completing the course, you will understand how international and national laws, and organizational policies, apply to decisions you have to make on a daily basis when you collect, conserve, use and transfer plant genetic resources.
Participants must be prepared to dedicate around 6 hours per week, and a total of 45 hours for the whole course. After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Identify national and international laws and organizational policies which apply to your day to day work with plant genetic resources.
  • Appreciate what legal instruments to use when accessing, using or distributing plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) and data.
  • Appreciate ‘grey areas’ and flexibilities that currently exist within the framework of applicable laws and policies.
  • Feel comfortable using the Standard Material Transfer Agreement.
  • Know what resources and people you can go to for help if you are unsure how to proceed addressing genetic resources policy issues in your daily work.
