Hon. Josephine Lagu
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Republic of South Sudan
Hon. Josephine Lagu is the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security for the Republic of South Sudan. Hon. Lagu is passionate about the development of the agricultural sector to fuel economic growth in the nascent country. She has been actively promoting the motto “Let’s Produce What We Eat”, as a way of ending the country’s dependence on food imports. She holds a BA Hons degree majoring in Philosophy, and Psychology (minor) from the University of Khartoum, Sudan. After teaching for a few years in Juba University, she pursued postgraduate studies in the University of London, Institute of Education in the United Kingdom, where she attained an Advanced Diploma in Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology, before undertaking her PhD studies. As a trained teacher, she achieved the position of Senior Lecturer in Education and briefly served as Undersecretary for Higher Education in the then Ministry of Education, Government of South Sudan. Hon. Lagu Josephine is a seasoned politician and women’s rights activist. She is currently the leader of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and Chairperson of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), an umbrella grouping of eight political parties that are signatories to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.
