Climate Smart Agriculture

Agriculture that sustainably increases productivity, resilience (adaptation), reduces/removes. GHGs (mitigation), and enhances achievement of national food security and development goals.
It integrates the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental) by jointly addressing food security and climate challenges. It is composed of three main pillars:
sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes;
adapting and building resilience to climate change;
reducing and/or removing greenhouse gases emissions, where possible.

Natural Resource Management and Ecosystems Services

In the context of the ECA sub-region, natural resources and associated ecosystems services play a key role in supporting sustainable agricultural productivity. The state and dynamics of the ECA natural resource base and capacity to provide the required services deliver both opportunities to foster agricultural productivity and pose challenges in promoting the sector. Some of the key constituents of natural resources include, water, soils, forests, on-farm trees, and biodiversity outside of the farming systems. Fighting striga: Resistance genes deployed to boost sorghum productivity

Researchers under the regional body ASARECA (Association for strengthening agricultural research in Eastern and central Africa) have developed a high yielding striga resistant sorghum that will boost sorghum productivity in the region. This comes as a relief to sorghum farmers in the east and central Africa who for a long time have had to battle with the striga parasitic weed that has constrained production of this crop leading to the yield loss According to Dr. Read more about Fighting striga: Resistance genes deployed to boost sorghum productivity
