New video highlights progress in fight against MLN
Five years since the Maize Lethal Necrosis disease (MLN) was reported in Kenya, leading to spirited efforts to fight it in Eastern and Central Africa, scientists are now confident they are close to subduing the virus. In a recently released video, scientists Dan Makumbi, a breeder CIMMYT; Douglas Maino, University of Nairobi; and Brian Isabirye, ASARECA, state that research has zeroed in on hybrids, which are tolerant to the disease. The hybrids, which are currently under multiple site trials in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda South Sudan and Ethiopia, constitute a major front in the battle against MLN. Already, a cocktail of recommended agronomic practices and vigilance in the use of seed has enabled farmers in the sub-region to cope, as scientists search for a more sustainable solution.
