The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) is a non-profit making intergovernmental organization established in September 1994 by the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of the eleven (11) countries, namely: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

ASARECA appointed coordinator of animal genetic resources initiative in Eastern Africa

ASARECA has been appointed as secretariat for the Eastern Africa Sub-regional focal point (S-RFP) for the sustainable use of animal genetic resources(AnGR) under the project on “Strengthening the Capacity of African Countries on Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of African Animal Genetic Resources”. Kenya Approves Bt Maize for Limited Field Release

Kenya’s Biosafety Authority has granted a conditional approval for environmental release of insect resistant maize (Bt maize) for National Performance Trials.

The Bt maize has been genetically modified to produce an insecticide – Bt protein – that kills certain insect pests. The gene added to the maize comes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which has long been known to possess an insecticidal effect and widely used in organic agriculture. ASARECA impacts published

A new report highlighting the impacts of ASARECA work during its first operational plan  (OP 1) is out.  The book titled “ASARECA Operational Plan 1 Impacts”, shows that the change in value of agricultural output for the Eastern and Central Africa (ECA) sub- region over the programme period was positive, with four countries exceeding CAADP targets.

EAAPP Conference Proceedings Published

Proceedings of the Eastern Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme End-of-Phase One Project Conference and Exhibition have been published.  Under the theme, “Regional Specialisation for Enhanced Agricultural Productivity and Transformation”, the conference was held at Kilimo Grand Resort, Nairobi Kenya from September 14-17, 2015.

An ambitious regional programme, the Eastern Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (EAAPP), which ASARECA has been coordinating for the last five years, has posted impressive impacts, prompting a call for immediate roll-out of a second phase.
